How to explore possible crystal matches

  1. Note the stone's color, whether it is transparent or opaque, and whether it is raw, polished, or carved.
  2. Compare its shape, surface, and visible inclusions with several candidates in our crystal library. Color alone is not enough to identify a mineral.
  3. Read each candidate's mineral facts and care notes. Keep the identification tentative until there is evidence beyond a visual resemblance.

What a photo cannot confirm

Lighting, filters, polish, and treatments can change a stone's appearance. A picture cannot establish its chemical composition, confirm a seller's origin claim, or reliably distinguish every imitation. For a valuable or uncertain specimen, ask a qualified gemologist or mineral specialist to examine it. Avoid destructive scratch, heat, or chemical tests on an unknown stone.
